A party banner is a row of flags with one letter on each, strung across a wall, a doorway or a table. This tool turns any words you type into flags at a true printed size, one, two or four to an A4 sheet, with a fold strip on every flag that folds over the string.

Every flag is drawn at a fixed, true size, so a banner made today matches one made next year. Large flags are 18 by 25 cm, one to a portrait sheet; medium flags are 12.8 by 17.2 cm, two to a landscape sheet; small flags are 8.8 by 12.4 cm, four to a sheet. The letter is drawn as a shape rather than typed text, so it prints crisply on any printer and fills as much of the flag as its shape allows: high and centred on a pennant, where the point narrows, and larger on a square or scalloped flag.
The outline of each flag is its cut line. Above it sits a strip about 2 to 3 cm deep with a dashed fold line: fold it back over the string and tape or glue it down, and the flags slide along to space themselves evenly. Gaps between words become a star, a heart or a blank flag, or you can skip them and leave bare string. The bright mix and the pastels give each flag the next colour in turn; one colour suits a calmer room, and black and white prints well on coloured card. The tool also works out how many sheets the banner takes and roughly how long it will hang, so you can cut the string before you start.
The tool tells you when you make it. As a guide, medium flags take about 15 cm of string each with a small gap, so Happy birthday with a star in the middle is about 2.1 m long. Add 50 cm at each end for tying.
Large flags are 18 by 25 cm, medium flags 12.8 by 17.2 cm and small flags 8.8 by 12.4 cm, measured with the fold strip. Large suits a long wall or a garden, medium a living room or a doorway, and small a mantelpiece, a table edge or a cake stand.
Yes. Untick capitals and the letters print as you typed them. Capitals read best from across a room; a name in lower case looks softer above a cot or a bed.
Fold the strip at the top of each flag back along the dashed line, lay the string in the fold and tape or glue the strip down. Thread the flags in order, then tie the string to hooks, curtain poles or removable adhesive hooks at each end.
Choose a white flag with a coloured edge instead of a solid fill, or choose black and white and print on coloured card. Both still read clearly from across a room.
