About this version

Retirement parties tend to happen in two places: in the workplace, on someone's last afternoon, and at home or in a function room with family and friends. This banner suits both. It spells Happy retirement in classic white capitals on navy pennant flags, the traditional triangle shape, with a plain navy flag in the gap between the words rather than a star or a heart, so it reads as smart rather than childish. Navy also photographs well behind a group, which matters when everyone gathers for a picture with the cake.

There are 16 flags in all: 15 letters and the blank. On medium flags, two to a landscape A4 sheet, that is eight sheets and about 2.3 m of string, the right length for one wall of an office or a function room. For a long hall or a marquee, choose large flags and the banner stretches to about 3.2 m on 16 sheets. Solid navy uses a fair amount of ink, so if the office printer is slow or low, choose white flags with a navy edge and navy letters instead; they read just as well from across a room.

Most people add a name, such as Happy retirement Linda, or a nickname everyone at work uses. The tool adds another blank flag before the name. If the retirement is from a long career, some teams print a second, shorter banner with the years, such as 1989 to 2026, on small flags for the cake table; numbers print just as large as letters.
