Questions people ask

Classroom bunting: your questions answered

Making, printing and hanging bunting that lasts the year.

Making bunting

How do I make classroom bunting?

Choose your words, make one flag per letter in a matching style, print them on card, cut them out, punch two holes near the top and thread them onto string. WallKiwi does the design for you: type your phrase, choose a look and print flags with punch marks and a stringing guide.

Where can I find free printable classroom bunting?

WallKiwi's Welcome to Year 3 example pack is free to download and print. Designing bunting from your own words in a designed look uses credits.

How do you make personalised bunting with letters?

Give each character its own flag and keep the colours and lettering identical across them, so the words read as one string. WallKiwi draws each different letter once and prints it as many times as your phrase needs it, so repeated letters always match.

What can I write on classroom bunting?

Short, cheerful phrases work best: Welcome, your class name, Reading corner, Well done or a topic title. Keep it under 60 characters so the string fits across a wall or above a board.

What shape bunting flags can I make?

WallKiwi makes triangle, swallowtail, scalloped and rectangle flags. Each look you are offered comes with its own flag shape, so pick the one that suits your room.

Sizes and paper

What size should bunting flags be?

Around 20 cm tall reads well from across a classroom without the string getting too heavy. WallKiwi flags are 20 cm tall and two fit on one A4 sheet.

How many bunting flags fit on an A4 sheet?

With 20 cm flags, two fit on an A4 sheet: triangles sit head to tail so less card is wasted. Welcome to Year 3, for example, makes 17 flags on 9 sheets, plus the stringing guide.

What paper is best for classroom bunting?

Card around 160gsm keeps flags flat and lets them last the school year. Thin paper curls and tears at the punched holes. Print at 100% on A4, never fit to page, or the flags come out smaller.

Should I laminate bunting?

Laminate bunting you will put up every year, such as a welcome string. Punch the holes after laminating and leave a sealed edge round each flag so it does not peel.

Hanging it up

How do you string bunting?

Punch two holes near the top of each flag, then thread ribbon or string in and out so the flag hangs flat. Follow the order on WallKiwi's stringing guide so the words read correctly, and leave a little string at each end for tying.

What do you use to hang bunting in a classroom?

Ribbon, garden twine or thin cord all work. Tie the ends to adhesive hooks, display board pins or existing fixtures. Check your school's guidance before attaching anything near lights or fire exits.

How do you hang bunting without damaging walls?

Use removable adhesive hooks or tabs designed for painted walls, and keep the string light so they hold. Avoid nails and tape on fresh paint.

How do you keep bunting flags straight?

Use two punch holes per flag rather than one, so each flag sits level on the string. WallKiwi marks two small circles near the top of every flag to show where to punch.

Using WallKiwi

Which characters can I put on bunting?

Letters from any alphabet, numbers, spaces and the marks & ! ? ' and -. A phrase can be up to 60 characters with up to 36 different characters, and capitals and lower case are kept exactly as you type them.

Can I match bunting I already have?

Yes. Upload a photo of bunting or lettering you like and the looks are designed from it, so new flags sit happily beside the old ones. The words always come from what you type, never from the photo.

Does a bunting pack use credits?

Yes. Display boards, lettering, bunting and decoration packs all use credits, and a free account includes some each month. Downloading the example pack is free.
