This banner spells Welcome home on swallowtail flags in forest green with white lettering and a heart flag between the words. It prints two flags to a landscape A4 sheet, six sheets in all, and hangs about 1.8 m long: enough for a hallway, a porch or across a front window.

A welcome home banner is usually made in a hurry: someone is back from hospital, from a long trip abroad, from a deployment, from university at the end of term, or bringing a new baby or a rescue dog home for the first time. This one is ready to print as it stands. It spells Welcome home in rounded white capitals on 11 swallowtail flags, the kind with a notch cut into the bottom edge, with a heart on a twelfth flag between the two words. Every flag is the same deep forest green, which looks calm and smart rather than party-loud, and suits a front door, a porch or a hallway.
The flags are 12.8 by 17.2 cm, two to a landscape A4 sheet, so the banner takes six sheets and about 1.8 m of string. The swallowtail notch is part of the cut line: cut straight up into the point of the V on each flag, then back down, rather than trying to turn the scissors in the corner. A craft knife on a cutting mat makes the notch cleaner still.
To make it personal, add a name: Welcome home Dad or Welcome home Mia and Leo. The tool keeps the heart between each pair of words, so a three-word banner has two hearts. If green is not right for the person coming home, choose another single colour, or switch to the bright mix for a child. For a window, choose white flags with a coloured edge so the light shows through less and the letters stand out from the street.
Printing on card keeps the flags flat in a draughty hallway. Hang the banner where it will be seen at the moment someone walks in: across the inside of the front door frame, along the banister or above the first doorway. Removable adhesive hooks hold a card banner well and come off paintwork cleanly afterwards.
