In short

Place card maker

A place card is a small folded card with a guest's name that shows where they sit. This tool prints one card per name, the name on both sides so it reads across the table, with an optional second line such as a meal choice, at a true size: 90 by 55 mm or 105 by 74 mm folded.

How to make it

  1. Type the names, one per line. To add a second line, such as a table number, a meal choice or an organisation, type it after a bar: Ruth Evans | Fish.
  2. Choose the card size, a style (plain, a fine border, or a small heart, star or sprig of leaves), the lettering and the colours.
  3. Press Make it, print at 100% on card, cut along the dashed lines and fold each card along the dotted line across its middle.

How it prints

Every card is drawn at a true size and the sheet header states it, so you can check the first one with a ruler. A standard card is 90 by 110 mm flat and 90 by 55 mm folded, four to a portrait A4 sheet. A large card is 105 by 148 mm flat and 105 by 74 mm folded, an A7 face, two to a landscape A4 sheet. Cards are butted together so one cut serves two edges, and every card has a dotted fold line across its middle.

The name prints on both halves, the top half turned upside down, so once the card is folded into a tent the name reads the right way up from both sides of the table. A name always stays on one line: a long name shrinks to fit, and never wraps or runs off the card. Most names in a set print at the same size, and only the longest quarter shrink below it. A second line prints smaller under the name. Up to 120 cards make one set; colours can be one colour, WallKiwi's bright mix, soft pastels with dark lettering, or black and white for coloured or kraft card.

Questions

Questions people ask

What size are the place cards?

Standard cards are 90 by 55 mm folded (90 by 110 mm flat), four to an A4 sheet. Large cards are 105 by 74 mm folded (105 by 148 mm flat), two to a sheet. Print at 100% or actual size; the size is printed at the top of each sheet so you can check it with a ruler.

How do I add a meal choice or a table number?

Type it on the same line as the name, after a bar: Ruth Evans | Fish or Ruth Evans | Table 3. It prints in smaller lettering under the name on both sides. Caterers find meal choices on the place cards quicker than a separate list.

What happens with a very long name?

It shrinks to fit on one line rather than wrapping or running off the card. Very long double-barrelled names print smaller than the rest; if a name looks too small, use a first name and surname only, or switch to large cards.

What card should I print on?

Use card of 200 to 300 gsm, which most home printers take one sheet at a time through the rear tray. Thinner paper will not stand up once folded. Ivory, pale grey and kraft card all suit a wedding.

How many cards fit on a sheet?

Four standard cards fit a portrait A4 sheet and two large cards fit a landscape one, with 10 mm margins so home printers do not clip them. Sixty guests on standard cards take 15 sheets.
