A scout hut notice board parents and young people both read

Two audiences use the same walls: young people who want to see what is next and what they have earned, and parents at pick-up who need dates, kit lists and who to ask.

In short

Scout hut and youth group notice boards

A scout hut or youth group hall needs a board of meeting times for each section, a parents' board by the door with camp dates, kit lists, payments and contacts, an achievements wall for badges and awards, and event signs and bunting for open evenings. Use A4 headers on 250 gsm card and laminate anything near the door.

What to make

What a youth group hall usually needs

  1. Meeting times by section

Each section with its age range, night and times, and the leader to contact. It answers the most common question from new families at the door.

  2. A parents' board by the door

Upcoming camps and trips, kit lists, payment deadlines and forms due back, read at pick-up. Put it where parents wait, not deep inside the hall.

  3. An achievements wall

Badges being worked on this term, awards gained and photos of recent activities. Young people like to see their progress, and it shows families what the group does.

  4. A programme for the term

Week by week: hikes, cooking, first aid, games nights. Young people plan around it and parents know when to send old clothes.

  5. Event signs and bunting

For open evenings, fundraisers and award nights, a welcome sign at the gate and flags across the hall. A dressed hall makes visiting families feel welcome.

Questions

Questions people ask

What should be on a scout hut notice board?

Meeting times for each section, the term programme, upcoming camps and trips with kit lists and payment dates, leader contacts and an achievements area. Put parent information near the door.

Can we put photos of young members on the wall?

Only with permission, and following your organisation's safeguarding and photo policy. Many groups use first names only, or no names, alongside photos.

How do we get parents to read notices?

Put them where parents wait at pick-up, keep them short with the date and deadline first, and use the same layout each time. Many parents photograph the board, so clear A4 notices help.

What makes a good achievements board?

Badges and awards being worked on, recent achievements and photos of activities. Celebrate effort as well as awards, and refresh it each term.
