What to make

What a baby shower usually needs

  1. A welcome sign

The parent-to-be's name and a line such as welcome to the baby shower, on an easel or the front door. At a shared venue it tells guests which room is yours.

  2. A banner

Oh baby, welcome baby or the baby's name if it has been shared, across the wall behind the chair where gifts are opened. That wall is in every photograph.

  3. Small signs for the afternoon

Gifts here, guess the date, advice for the parents, nappy raffle. Each one tells guests what to do without the host explaining it twenty times.

  4. Thank-you tags

A tag on each favour with a short thank you and the date. Guests take them home, so a clear name and date make them a small keepsake.

  5. Game cards

Guess the baby food, name the baby animal, predictions for the baby. A5 cards with a pen at each place keep guests mixing and give the shy ones something to do.

Questions

Questions people ask

What signs do you need for a baby shower?

Most showers use a welcome sign, a banner for the main wall, a gift table sign and a sign or card for each game. A sign for food and drinks is useful if guests serve themselves.

Should the banner use the baby's name?

Only if the parents have chosen to share it. Oh baby, welcome baby or the parent's name are good choices when the name is a secret or not yet decided.

When is a baby shower usually held?

Often in the last couple of months of pregnancy, when the parent-to-be still feels up to it, though some families prefer to celebrate after the birth. The parent's wishes come first.

How do I keep the decorations simple?

Pick one theme and two colours, put the effort into the banner wall and the welcome sign, and leave the rest of the room plain. A few matching pieces look more finished than many mismatched ones.
