A shop sign maker turns a few typed words into a clear sign for a door or window. This tool prints an open and closed pair to hang back to back, an opening hours table, a sale sign or a short notice, on A4 or A3, with the main words as large as the sheet allows.

Each sign is set so it reads in the right order from the street. The main words, such as Open, SALE or Back in 10 minutes, are lettered as large as the sheet allows, and every other line is held to a little over half their size. The open and closed pair prints as two sheets with the same layout and the same lettering size, with punch marks at the two top corners in the same place on both, so the sheets line up when glued back to back and hung on a cord. Opening hours print as a table, one row per day typed as Monday = 9am to 5pm, with alternate rows shaded, the shop name above and an optional note below.
A4 suits a door; A3 (29.7 by 42 cm) suits a shop window and is read from about twice as far away. You can print A3 on an A3 printer, or at a print shop or library. The solid band style puts the main words in white on a block of colour, which is what catches the eye from across a street; the border style is white with a double coloured frame and uses much less ink. A sign is one colour or black and white, since a mix of colours on a door reads as clutter. A notice can add a large block arrow pointing down, left or right, to a bell, a side door or a counter.
Choose Open and closed. The tool prints two sheets with the same layout. Glue them back to back, or slip them into one plastic sleeve, punch the two holes marked at the top corners and thread a cord through, then turn the sign round at opening and closing time.
Yes. Choose A3 and the whole sign scales up to 29.7 by 42 cm. If your printer only takes A4, save the PDF and print it at a library, a print shop or a supermarket photo counter, set to actual size.
One day per line, with an equals sign between the day and the times: Monday = 9am to 5.30pm, or Sunday = Closed. A line without an equals sign, such as Late opening on Thursdays, prints across the whole row. Up to ten lines fit.
Printer ink fades in direct sun within a few weeks, the reds and yellows first. Laminate the sign or put it in a plastic sleeve, and reprint it each season. A sign printed on card stays flat against the glass.
Yes. Type up to three lines: the first prints largest, the second and third smaller. Common notices are Back in 10 minutes, Please ring the bell, Card payments only, No dogs except assistance dogs and Please use the other door.
