At home

A new home with the walls planned, not guessed

Moving day goes smoother with a sign on every door, and the first weeks go better if you test a house number and a gallery wall on paper before drilling.

In short

Moving into a new home

When you move, print an A4 sign for every room door so boxes land in the right place, test a house number template at true size on the door before buying or painting it, and plan the first gallery wall with paper templates taped to the wall. Use 250 gsm card for anything that stays up.

What to make

What to print for a move

  1. Room signs for moving day

Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom 1, bedroom 2, loft, on A4 sheets taped to each door frame, matching what is written on the boxes. The removal team and friends helping out stop asking where things go.

  2. A house number you can see

Print the number at true size and tape it to the door or the gatepost, then step back to the pavement. Delivery drivers and visitors need to read it from the road, day and night.

  3. A gallery wall over the sofa

Cut a paper template for every frame, tape the layout to the wall and live with it for a few days. Mark the hook positions through the paper, then drill once.

  4. A welcome home banner

For the family arriving first, for a housewarming, or for someone coming home from a long stay away. Flags along the hallway or across the fireplace are the first photograph in the new place.

  5. Lettering for one wall

A family name, a house name or a single word above the dining table or in the hallway, in letters cut from card. It makes a bare room feel lived in before the furniture arrives.

Questions

Questions people ask

How do you label rooms for removals?

Give every room a name or number, write it on the boxes, and tape a matching A4 sign to each door frame in the new home. Number bedrooms rather than naming them after people, so there is no confusion on the day.

What size should a house number be?

Large enough to read from the road in daylight and under a porch light, in a colour that contrasts with the door or wall. Printing the number at true size and taping it up is the quickest way to judge before buying.

How do I plan a gallery wall without lots of holes?

Cut paper templates the size of each frame, mark where the hook sits on the back, and tape them to the wall. Adjust until you like it, then drill through the marks on the paper.

Should I check for cables before drilling?

Yes. In a home you have just moved into you do not know where pipes and cables run, so use a detector and avoid drilling directly above, below or beside sockets and switches.

What should go up first in a new home?

The house number, so deliveries find you, then anything that makes daily life work, such as hooks and labels. Gallery walls and lettering can wait until you know how you use each room.
