About this version

A welcome sign is the first thing guests see at a wedding, usually on an easel by the door of the ceremony room or at the start of the path to the reception. This version is laid out the way most wedding stationery is: a small line, Welcome to the wedding of, across the top; the couple's names as large as the sheet allows in the middle; a short rule with a diamond; and the date underneath. The names Amy and Joe are set in classic display lettering on three lines, so each word stands tall, and the whole sign is printed in sage green inside a fine double frame whose corners are cut in as quarter circles, with a small diamond set into each corner.

The sheet is A3 portrait, 297 mm wide and 420 mm tall, which is the smallest size that reads well on an easel from a few metres away. It needs A3 paper, and the footer says so. If your printer only takes A4, download the PDF and take it to a print shop: most will print A3 on card while you wait, and they can enlarge the same file to A2 or A1 without any loss of sharpness, because the lettering is drawn as shapes rather than typed. A1 is the usual size for a large easel at a venue.

Type your own names in place of Amy and Joe and your own date in the line below. Keep the names short and joined with and or an ampersand, and the tool will break them over lines for you. If you would rather have the venue or a welcome message, put it in the bottom line, such as The Old Barn, Hartfield. For a different look, choose the double border or no border at all, and another single colour from navy, berry, gold, charcoal or forest green to match the flowers.

Print at 100%, not fit to page, on the thickest card the printer or print shop offers. Foam board from a craft shop gives a rigid sign that will not bow on an easel: spray mount or a glue stick along every edge holds it flat. An A3 frame with the glass taken out is the quickest neat stand. If the sign is going outside, put it in a clear plastic sleeve, because sage ink on card marks easily in the rain.
