About this version

At a wedding venue, a festival field or a big house party, guests arrive in a hurry and do not know the way. A row of direction signs saves the bride's father from standing at the gate all afternoon. This version prints Ceremony as the main word with this way underneath, and a bold block arrow beside them pointing right. On a landscape sheet the arrow sits beside the words, taking about a quarter of the width, so a sign can be read in one glance from a car window or across a car park.

The sheet is A4 landscape, 297 by 210 mm, with a single rounded border in forest green, and the lettering and arrow in the same green. The arrow can point left, right, up (for straight on) or down. On a portrait sheet a left or right arrow moves below the words instead of beside them, and an up arrow always sits above the words, the way road signs show straight on.

Make one sign for each turn and each place guests need: Ceremony, Reception, Drinks, Parking, Toilets, Photo booth, Bar, Marquee, or Wedding with the couple's names. Walk the route from the car park on the day before, and put a sign at every point where someone could take a wrong turn, not only at the end. For a long drive, a sign every hundred metres or so stops guests worrying that they have missed it. For an A3 sign that reads from a moving car, switch the paper to A3.

Print at 100% on card, then slip each sign into an A4 plastic sleeve or laminate it if it is going outside: dew alone will curl paper by mid-morning. Cable ties through two punched holes fix a sign to a gate or a fence post; for a lawn, tape it to a garden cane or a wooden stake. Take them all down afterwards, starting from the far end, so the last guests can still find their way out.
