About this version

Shelf-edge labels are the small tickets along the front of a shelf in a corner shop, farm shop, deli or village store. This set prints them at 70 by 38 mm, the size that slides into most clip-on shelf strips, fourteen to an A4 sheet; the ten in this set fit on one sheet. The plain style keeps every label white: the product name prints in bold black type at the top with a short navy rule under it, the price fills the middle in large navy classic lettering, and a unit price note sits at the bottom in grey. The sample is a small grocery range: semi-skimmed milk 2 pints £1.45 (64p per litre), six free-range eggs £2.10, white sliced bread £1.25, baked beans 415 g 95p (22.9p per 100 g), cheddar 400 g £3.60 (90p per 100 g), ground coffee 227 g £4.20, bananas 20p each, washing-up liquid £1.10, 80 tea bags £2.70 and orange juice 1 litre £1.85.

Type your own products and prices, one per line, with the unit price after a bar. For a promotion, add | was and the old price and the label shows it struck through. Navy is calm and easy to read; forest green suits a farm shop, and black and white is cheapest when you reprint often.

Shops selling food by weight or volume generally need to show a unit price, such as per kg, per 100 g or per litre, so customers can compare sizes. Put the product size in the name, as in Cheddar 400 g, and keep the unit the same across similar products. Check labels against the till system each week, since a wrong shelf price is the most common complaint in a small shop.

Print at 100% on plain paper if your shelves have clear strips, or on card if you fix labels with tape. Cut along the dashed lines; labels share their edges, so one straight cut separates two. Print a single test label first and hold it against a strip, since strips vary by a millimetre or two between makes.
