In short

Jar label maker

Jar labels name what is in a jar and, if you like, when it was filled or made. This tool prints them at true size on A4: round lid labels at 40, 50, 63 and 70 mm, rectangles of 70 by 40 mm, tall 40 by 90 mm spice labels and 70 by 45 mm ovals.

How to make it

  1. Type your labels, one to a line. Add a second line after a |, such as Strawberry jam | Homemade or Lasagne | Serves 6.
  2. Choose the shape and size to match your jars, a line to write on (Filled, Made, Frozen or Best before), the style and the colours.
  3. Press Make it, print at 100% on sticker paper or card, and cut round each label on its outline.

How it prints

Every label prints at a fixed, true size, stated at the top of each sheet so you can check one with a ruler before cutting the rest. Round labels come in the four lid sizes people actually have: 40 mm for small spice jars and sample pots, 24 to a sheet; 50 mm for small storage jars, 15 to a sheet; 63 mm for a standard jam jar lid, 12 to a sheet; and 70 mm for larger jam and preserving jars, 6 to a sheet. Rectangles are 70 by 40 mm, 12 to a sheet; tall labels are 40 by 90 mm for spice and tall jars, 8 to a sheet; and ovals are 70 by 45 mm, 10 to a sheet.

Rectangles share their cut lines, so one cut serves two labels. Each round or oval label sits in a dashed square guide: cut the squares apart, then cut round the curved outline. The words are drawn as shapes in a choice of lettering, every label in a set at the same size so a shelf of jars matches. Choose a double-line border, a thick coloured band round the edge or a solid colour, and a short line to write a date on. Printed on full-sheet sticker paper the labels stick straight on; on plain paper or card, fix them with a glue stick or double-sided tape.

Questions

Questions people ask

What size is a jam jar lid label?

A standard 1 lb (454 g) jam jar has a 63 mm lid, so choose the 63 mm round label. Larger preserving jars often take 70 mm lids, and small jam and spice jars 40 to 50 mm. Measure across the top of your lid to be sure.

What paper should I print jar labels on?

Full-sheet A4 sticker paper is easiest: print, cut round each label and peel. Matt paper takes pencil and pen for the write-on line. For freezer labels, use freezer-safe or waterproof sticker paper, as ordinary labels can lift in the cold.

How many labels fit on a sheet?

24 round labels at 40 mm, 15 at 50 mm, 12 at 63 mm and 6 at 70 mm. 12 rectangles at 70 by 40 mm, 8 tall labels at 40 by 90 mm and 10 ovals at 70 by 45 mm.

Can I print the same label several times?

Yes. Set Copies of each and every label prints that many times side by side, which suits a batch of jam or a set of matching storage jars.

How do I take jar labels off again?

Paper labels soak off in warm soapy water in a few minutes. Sticker paper usually peels off; any glue left behind comes off with a little cooking oil on a cloth, then washing up liquid.
