On a market stall the price has to be read from the far side of the table, by someone deciding whether to stop. These cards are sized for that. Each is 100 by 70 mm, four to an A4 sheet, so the eight cards in this set print on two sheets. The item name sits in white on a kiwi green band across the top, the price fills the middle in large dark rounded lettering, and a short note sits underneath. The sample is a fruit and vegetable stall: Cox apples £1.80 per kg, Conference pears £2 per kg, strawberries £3 for a 400 g punnet, new potatoes £1.20 per kg, tomatoes on the vine £2.50 per kg, a bunch of carrots £1.50, cauliflower £1.40 each and local honey £6.50 for a 340 g jar. Every price on the set is lettered at the same size, so the cards look even along the front of the stall.
Type your own produce and prices, one per line, as Item = price | note. The same cards suit a farm shop, a cheese stall, a plant stall, a bric-a-brac table or a second-hand book stall. For a stall with a single price for everything, type one line and set Copies of each. If your stall has its own colour, choose it; forest green, sage and coral all read well from a distance.
Show the unit clearly. Shoppers compare per kg and per punnet prices, and for most loose food sold by weight or by volume, the price per kilogram or per litre should be shown. Put the price card in front of the produce it belongs to rather than on top of it, and keep a few blank cards in the cash box for when a price changes during the day.
Print on card at 100% and cut along the dashed lines; the cards share their cut lines, so once the outer edges are trimmed, one cut across and one down separate all four. Market stalls are damp and windy, so slip each card into a clear plastic card holder or a wipe-clean pocket, or laminate a set you reuse every week and write changing prices with a dry wipe pen. Spike holders or crocodile clips hold the cards upright in a crate of produce.
