About this version

Most houseplants die of the wrong amount of water rather than neglect, and the right amount differs a lot from plant to plant. This version prints a stake for each of seven common houseplants with a care note on it, so whoever does the watering, you, a partner, a house sitter or a neighbour while you are away, knows what each plant wants. The plants are Monstera (Swiss cheese plant), Peace lily (Spathiphyllum), Snake plant (Sansevieria), Pothos (Devil's ivy), Spider plant (Chlorophytum), Aloe vera and Fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata). Each stake is 120 by 25 mm with a point, and the seven fill half of one landscape A4 sheet, which holds 14.

Each label has three lines: the name in classic lettering, the other name in bold, and a short care note such as Water every 2 to 3 weeks. Any light. To make your own, type each plant as Name | other name | care note, using two | marks. Keep the care note short, about eight words, or it is shortened to fit. There is no date line by default; switch it to Planted if you want to record when you repotted.

Write care notes that describe the check rather than a fixed day: Water when the top 5 cm is dry works in summer and in winter, while Water every Sunday drowns most plants by December. Group the light needs too: bright indirect light means near a window but out of direct midday sun, which scorches monstera and fiddle leaf fig leaves. The soft pastel bands keep the labels quiet among leaves rather than shouting from every pot.

Print at 100% on card. Indoors there is no need to laminate, but a laminated stake survives watering splashes for years and wipes clean. Push each stake into the edge of the pot so the name faces the room. For hanging plants, cut the point off and tape the label to the pot instead.
