About this version

Fruit trees outlive their shop labels. The plastic tag from the nursery fades or snaps within a year or two, and a few seasons later nobody remembers whether the tree by the shed is a Cox or a Bramley, which matters when you come to prune it or find a pollination partner. This version prints 10 hanging tags, each 70 by 35 mm, on one A4 sheet that holds 15. The fruit are Apple (Cox's Orange Pippin), Apple (Bramley's Seedling), Pear (Conference), Plum (Victoria), Cherry (Stella), Damson (Merryweather), Fig (Brown Turkey), Blackcurrant (Ben Sarek), Gooseberry (Invicta) and Redcurrant (Rovada). Each tag has a sage band at the clipped end with a 6 mm hole, the fruit in classic lettering, the variety in bold, and a Planted line.

To tag your own trees, type each one as Fruit | variety, one to a line. Two trees of the same fruit get a line each. The five spare tags on the sheet are useful for new trees later; type a few blank names such as Tree to keep them, or add your rootstock to the variety, such as Cox's Orange Pippin, M26, which tells you how big the tree will grow.

The planting date and variety are what you need when a tree is not fruiting: many apples and pears need a partner from the same flowering group nearby, and a young tree may simply be too young. Hang each tag on a low branch, not the main stem, and use soft wire or twine in a loose loop, checked each winter, because a tight wire strangles a branch as it thickens.

These tags spend years outside, so print on waterproof synthetic paper or laminate the sheet before cutting and leave a margin of sealed plastic around each tag. Punch the hole through the marked circle after laminating. Cut the clipped corners with two straight snips. In a sunny spot, a laminated tag lasts about two years; reprint from the same list when it fades.
