About this version

An allotment is bigger than a garden bed, and a small stake gets lost among potato haulms or a row of broad beans. This version prints 10 wide row markers, each 150 mm long and 50 mm wide with a 34 mm point, five to a portrait A4 sheet, so the set takes two sheets. The crops are Potatoes (Charlotte), Onions (Sturon), Garlic (Solent Wight), Broad beans (Aquadulce Claudia), Peas (Kelvedon Wonder), Parsnips (Gladiator), Carrots (Autumn King), Leeks (Musselburgh), Cabbage (Greyhound) and Sweetcorn (Incredible). Each name is set in rounded lettering in forest green, large enough to read from the path, with an 18 mm band and leaf at the flat end.

To plan your own plot, type each row in the order you walk it, one to a line, with the variety after a |. Ten rows fill two sheets; five more add a third. If you grow two rows of the same crop at different times, give each its own line, such as Potatoes | Charlotte, first earlies and Potatoes | Maris Piper, maincrop, so you can tell them apart at lifting time. Switch to the bright mix if you want crop families to stand out, which helps when you rotate beds the following year.

Row markers earn their keep where seed is slow to show. Parsnips can take a month to come up, and carrots and onions from seed look like grass at first, so a marker at each end of the row stops it being hoed out by mistake. The Sown date tells you when to expect them and when to resow a gap. Keep a photo of the plot with the markers in place: next year it is your rotation record.

Print at 100% on 250 gsm card or waterproof synthetic paper. Outdoors all season, laminate the card before cutting, or glue the printed marker to a strip of thin plywood or a cut plastic milk bottle for something that lasts several years. Push a third of the point into firm soil, and in a windy spot add a short cane behind each marker and tie them together.
