In short

Plant label maker

A plant label tells you what is growing where, which variety it is and when you sowed it. This tool prints garden labels at true size on A4: pointed plant stakes, wide row markers, pot labels and hanging tags for trees, each with the name in large lettering and a line for the date.

How to make it

  1. Type your plants, one to a line. Add the variety after a | and, if you like, a care note after a second |.
  2. Choose the label: a plant stake, a small stake, a row marker, a pot label or a hanging tag. Choose the date line, the colour and the lettering.
  3. Press Make it, print at 100% on card or waterproof paper, laminate if the labels are going outside, and cut round each outline.

How it prints

Every label prints at a fixed, true size, stated at the top of each sheet so you can check the first one with a ruler. Plant stakes are 120 by 25 mm, 14 to a sheet; small stakes are 100 by 20 mm, 16 to a sheet; row markers are 150 by 50 mm, 5 to a sheet; pot labels are 60 by 25 mm, 30 to a sheet; and hanging tags are 70 by 35 mm, 15 to a sheet. Stakes and row markers have a pointed end to push into the soil, and the writing runs along their length, the same way as on a shop-bought label. The plant's name is drawn as a shape rather than typed text, so it prints crisply and stays readable from the path.

A coloured band with a leaf marks the top end of every stake and pot label; on a hanging tag the band holds a 6 mm hole for wire or twine, the size an ordinary hole punch makes. Under the name sits the variety in smaller bold type, any care note, and a line to write the sowing or planting date on. Every name in a set is lettered at the same size, so a row of labels matches. Paper goes soft in the first shower, so for anything outdoors laminate the sheet before cutting, or print on waterproof synthetic paper, which most inkjet and laser printers take.

Questions

Questions people ask

What size are the plant labels?

Plant stakes are 120 by 25 mm and small stakes 100 by 20 mm, both with a pointed end. Row markers are 150 by 50 mm, pot labels 60 by 25 mm and hanging tags 70 by 35 mm. Each sheet states the size so you can check it with a ruler.

How do I make plant labels waterproof?

Laminate the printed sheet before cutting, then cut round each label leaving the plastic sealed past the edge. Or print on waterproof synthetic paper, sold for inkjet and laser printers, which needs no laminating and can be cut straight away.

Can I add the variety and the date?

Yes. Type the variety after a | on the same line, such as Tomato | Gardener's Delight. Choose Sown or Planted for the date line and each label gets a short line to write the date on in pencil.

How many labels fit on a sheet?

14 plant stakes, 16 small stakes, 5 row markers, 30 pot labels or 15 hanging tags. The tool fills as many sheets as your list needs and tells you the count before you print.

Can I print several labels for the same plant?

Yes. Set Copies of each and every plant prints that many times side by side, which suits a seed tray sown with several pots of the same variety.
