A seedling looks like every other seedling. Labels from the seed tray to the bed tell you what you sowed, which variety and when, long after the packet has gone.

Label seed trays with the crop, variety and sowing date on small markers about 2 × 10 cm, then move bigger markers to the bed when you plant out. Paper and card do not last outside: laminate labels and use a pencil or a permanent marker, or print on waterproof sheet. Keep saved seed in labelled jars, cool and dry.

Crop, variety and sowing date on a narrow marker pushed into each tray or pot. Write the date, because it tells you when to expect germination and when to give up and sow again.
A larger marker at the end of each row or the corner of each bed, readable from the path. Add the planting date so you can judge when to start harvesting.
Variety, the year collected and where it came from on a jar or envelope. Seed viability falls with age, so the year matters more than anything else on the label.
A simple drawing of the beds with this year's crops, kept in the shed or on the kitchen wall. Next spring it tells you what not to plant where.
A name for the veg patch or the greenhouse in bold letters, laminated and fixed to a fence or the inside of the greenhouse door. Children are more likely to help with a patch that has a name.

The crop, the variety and the date you sowed or planted. The variety matters when you want to grow a good one again, and the date helps you judge germination and harvest times.
Laminate them, leaving a sealed border around the edge, or print on waterproof synthetic sheet. Fix them to a stake rather than pushing card into the soil, and write dates in pencil or permanent marker.
It depends on the weather and the sun. Laminated labels often last a season, but sunlight fades ink over time. Plan to reprint markers each spring, which is quick when the files are saved.
Dry the seed fully, then keep it in a paper envelope or a jar in a cool, dry, dark place. Label it with the variety and the year collected, and use older seed first.
