About this version

A spice drawer of mismatched jars is hard to read at a glance, and ground cumin and ground coriander look alike. This version prints 16 tall labels, each 40 mm wide and 90 mm tall, eight to a portrait A4 sheet, four across and two down. The spices are Paprika (Sweet), Paprika (Smoked), Cumin (Ground), Coriander (Ground), Turmeric, Chilli flakes, Cinnamon (Ground), Nutmeg (Whole), Ginger (Ground), Garam masala, Mixed herbs, Oregano (Dried), Bay leaves, Black pepper (Whole), Cloves and Cardamom (Green pods). Each label has a sage band round its edge, a small rule with a diamond above and below the words, the name in classic lettering and the second line in small type.

To make your own set, type your spices one to a line, with ground, whole, smoked or hot after a |. Tall labels suit the common tall spice jars and the narrow glass jars with bamboo lids. If your jars are short and wide, the 40 mm round label fits the lid instead, which is easier to read from above in a drawer. Every name in the set is lettered at the same size, so the longest name decides the size for all, which keeps a row of jars neat.

Whole spices keep their flavour for two to three years, but ground spices fade within about a year, so if you buy in bulk and refill, add a Filled line from the list of lines to write on. Keep spices away from the cooker and out of direct sun, which is what fades both the spice and the label. A label on the lid as well as the side helps in a drawer.

Print at 100% on sticker paper, then cut along the shared lines, which serve two labels at once. Wrap each label round the jar with the band edges meeting neatly at the back. On a very narrow jar, trim a few millimetres off the band at each side; the words sit in the middle and are not affected.
