In short

Pantry jar labels

This sheet prints 12 pantry labels at 70 by 40 mm: three flours, three sugars, two rices, pasta, porridge oats, red lentils and couscous. Each has the name in classic charcoal lettering inside a double-line border and a Best before line, so a shelf of decanted jars stays easy to read and use in date order.

About this version

Decanting dry goods into matching jars tidies a cupboard, but plain flour and self-raising flour look identical once they are out of the bag. This version prints one full A4 sheet of 12 rectangle labels, each 70 by 40 mm, two across and six down. The labels are Plain flour, Self-raising flour, Strong bread flour, Caster sugar, Granulated sugar, Light brown sugar, Basmati rice, Risotto rice, Pasta (Penne), Porridge oats, Red lentils and Couscous. Each name is in classic display lettering in charcoal, inside a double-line charcoal border with softly rounded corners, and under it a Best before line to copy the date from the packet.

To make your own set, type what is in your cupboard, one jar to a line. A second line after a | prints smaller under the name, which is useful for the pasta shape or the type of rice. If your jars are tall and narrow, choose the tall 40 by 90 mm label; for jar lids, choose a round size that matches. Charcoal suits most kitchens; forest green, navy or sage look good on glass, and black and white is cheapest to print.

The best before line is the part that saves food. When you decant a new bag, write its date on the label in pencil, and when you top up a jar, use up the old contents first or rub the date out and write the new one. Flour keeps for months in a sealed jar, but wholemeal and nut flours go stale sooner. Keep a small offcut of the bag's cooking instructions in the jar for rice and grains that need different timings.

Print at 100% on matt sticker paper so the date line takes pencil. Cut the sheet along the shared lines, which serve two labels at once. On glass, smooth each sticker from the middle outwards to push out air. If you print on card instead, fix it with double-sided tape on the side of the jar where it will not be splashed.
