About this version

Everything looks the same once it is frozen, and a tub of bolognese and a tub of chilli are hard to tell apart through frost. This version prints one full A4 sheet of 12 rectangle labels, each 70 by 40 mm, two across and six down. The dishes are Chilli con carne, Bolognese sauce, Chicken curry, Vegetable soup, Beef stew, Fish pie, Lasagne, Shepherd's pie, Pesto, Bread rolls, Stewed apple and Chicken stock. Each label has the dish in rounded sky blue lettering inside a double-line border, the portion or amount underneath, such as Serves 4 or 1 litre, and a Frozen line for the date.

To make your own, type your batch cooking one dish to a line, with the portions after a |. Print a few spare labels of your regulars with Copies of each, so the next batch is labelled the moment it is portioned. Sky blue reads well on frosty tubs; choose the bright mix if you want meat, fish and vegetable dishes in different colours.

The Frozen date is what keeps a freezer safe and useful. Most cooked dishes are best eaten within three months of freezing, and soups and stews within four to six. Arrange the freezer with the oldest dates at the front. Cool food completely before freezing and label it before it goes in, while the tub is dry, because a label will not stick to a frosted lid. Defrost in the fridge overnight and reheat until piping hot all the way through.

Print at 100% on freezer-safe sticker paper, which stays stuck at minus 18 degrees and peels off when the tub is washed. On ordinary paper, slip the label inside a clear freezer bag or tape it over with clear tape. Cut the sheet along the shared lines and write the date in permanent marker, which does not smudge with condensation.
