About this version

A batch of jam usually fills four to eight jars, and every jar needs a label on the lid with the fruit and the date it was made. This version prints one full A4 sheet of 12 round labels, each 63 mm across, the lid size of a standard 1 lb (454 g) jam jar, three across and four down. There are four labels each for Strawberry jam, Raspberry jam and Blackcurrant jam. Each label has a thick berry red band round its edge with a white middle, the jam's name in classic lettering, Homemade in small type underneath and a Made line to write the date on.

To match your own batch, type each jam on its own line and set Copies of each to the number of jars it filled. Change Homemade after the | to whatever suits: the fruit's source, such as From the allotment, the weight, or a name if the jars are gifts. Marmalade, chutney, lemon curd and pickles work just as well. If your jars have larger lids, choose the 70 mm round label, which prints six to a sheet; for small gift jars, choose 50 or 40 mm.

The Made date matters because homemade jam keeps for about a year unopened in a cool, dark cupboard, and a month or so in the fridge once opened. Lower sugar jams and curds keep for less. Label the jars once they have cooled and the lids have sealed, as a label on a hot lid can wrinkle. If you sell jam at a fete or market, check the rules for your area, which usually ask for the name, the ingredients and a best before date on each jar.

Print at 100% on matt sticker paper so the date line takes a pen. Cut the sheet into squares along the dashed lines, then cut round each circle on its solid outline. For a traditional finish, put the label on a fabric or paper circle over the lid and tie it with string or a rubber band.
