An opening hours sign answers the question people ask most often at a shop door, especially when the door is locked. This one is laid out as a table so the eye can find a day quickly. It prints on one A4 portrait sheet inside a double navy border: a thick outer line and a fine inner one. At the top is the shop name, Rosie's Florist, in navy classic lettering, then an Opening hours heading in navy between two fine rules. Below that are seven rows, Monday to Sunday, with the day in navy on the left and the times in black on the right, every other row shaded pale blue. The sample hours include a Wednesday half day, 9am to 1pm, a late Friday until 6pm, an earlier Saturday start at 8.30am and Sunday closed. A note under the table reads Closed on bank holidays.
Type your own name and hours, one day to a line, as Monday = 9am to 5pm. Days that share hours can go on one line, such as Monday to Friday = 8am to 6pm, which gives the remaining rows more room and larger lettering. A line with no equals sign, such as Lunch 1pm to 2pm, prints across the whole row. Use the note line for anything that changes, such as Christmas opening or a phone number for deliveries.
Write times the way your customers say them: 9am to 5.30pm reads more easily than 09:00 to 17:30 on a door. Keep the format the same on every line so the times line up down the right-hand side. If you open late one evening a week, a separate notice beside the hours draws attention to it better than a footnote.
Print at 100% on card and tape it to the inside of the door glass at eye height, facing out, or put it in a clear frame by the entrance. The border style uses little ink. If the sun hits the door, laminate the sign or reprint it every few months, because the navy fades towards purple in strong light. Choose A3 for a large shop window.
