About this version

Plenty of small businesses work with the door locked or the counter unattended: a workshop, a studio, a dental practice, a guest house, a jeweller or a shop where the owner is also in the stockroom. A please ring the bell sign tells visitors what to do and shows them where. This one prints on one A4 portrait sheet in a thin berry frame. Please ring the bell is set in white classic lettering on a solid berry band across the top, across three lines so it stays large. Under the band, a black line reads We're just in the back and will be with you shortly, and at the bottom a large berry block arrow points straight down, so the sign can sit directly above the bell or buzzer.

The arrow can point left or right instead, for a bell beside the door, or be switched off. Change the second line to suit you: Please ring and wait, Ring once and we'll come to the door, or For deliveries ring the side door. A third line is there for opening hours or a phone number. Berry is a warm colour that stands out against most doors; navy or charcoal look more formal for an office or a practice.

Place the sign so the arrow lands within a hand's width of the bell, at about eye height, and make sure the bell itself is easy to see. If the bell is hard to hear from the back, a wireless doorbell with a portable chime is worth the small cost, and the sign is only as good as the answer. A line asking people not to knock helps if the door glass is fragile.

Print at 100% on card and fix the sign on the inside of the door glass, facing out, or on the wall beside the bell in a clear sleeve. Outdoors, laminate it and use outdoor double-sided tape. If the door faces the sun, reprint it each spring, as berry fades to pink.
