In short

Menu board maker

A menu board maker turns a typed list of dishes and prices into a printed menu sign. This tool sets your menu on a chalkboard or a light board, A4 or A3 portrait, in one or two columns, with dotted lines to each price and the text sized to fill the board without spilling over.

Last reviewed 3 October 2026

How to make it

  1. Type a title and an optional subtitle, such as opening times or a welcome.
  2. Type the menu: start a line with # for a heading, and write items as Name = price - description.
  3. Choose chalkboard or light, A4 or A3, one or two columns and a colour, then press Make it and print at 100%.

How it prints

The menu is set to fill the board. The tool tries the largest text size first and steps down until every heading and item fits, balances two columns so they end at about the same height, keeps each section in one column where it can, and centres the whole menu in the space under the title. Item names never print smaller than 8 pt on A4; if the menu is still too long, the items that do not fit are left off and the tool tells you how many, so you can cut lines, switch to two columns or choose A3 (29.7 by 42 cm). An item with a price gets a dotted leader across to the price; a menu with no prices at all, such as a party or a wedding bar, is set centred instead.

The chalkboard board is a dark charcoal panel with cream lettering, pale coloured headings and a thin cream frame, the look people expect on a café counter. It prints a solid dark area almost the size of the sheet, which uses a lot of ink and dries slowly on plain paper, so print one test copy first and use matt photo paper or card if you can. The light board is white with the title, headings and a double frame in your colour, and uses very little ink. Both print inside 10 mm margins, so they work on any home printer.

Questions

Questions people ask

How do I type the menu?

One line per item. Start a heading with #, such as # Drinks. Write an item as Name = price, and add a description after a space, a dash and a space: Flat white = £3.20 - Double shot with steamed milk. The price and the description are both optional.

Can I make a menu without prices?

Yes. Leave out the equals sign and the price. If no item has a price, the whole menu is set centred, which suits party food, a wedding bar or a set afternoon tea.

What if my menu is too long?

The tool shrinks the text until everything fits, down to 8 pt item names on A4. Beyond that it leaves the last items off and says how many. Cut a few lines or descriptions, switch to two columns, or choose A3, which gives twice the area.

Does the chalkboard version use a lot of ink?

Yes. It prints a dark panel across almost the whole sheet. Print one copy and laminate it rather than reprinting, or choose the light board for menus that change every day.

How do I display a printed menu?

Put A4 in a clear acrylic stand on the counter or a table, or in a clip frame on the wall. An A3 menu fits a standard A3 poster frame or a wooden easel. Laminating lets you wipe it clean in a café.
