About this version

More small shops, cafés, salons and market stalls now take cards only, and customers need to know before they queue, not when they reach the till. This sign says so plainly. It prints on one A4 portrait sheet inside a thin charcoal frame. The main words, Card payments only, are set in white rounded lettering on a solid charcoal band across the top half, wrapping onto three lines so each word stays large. Below the band, at a little over half that size, Sorry, we no longer take cash prints in black, and underneath that, slightly smaller again, Contactless and phones welcome prints in charcoal.

You can turn the sign round for the opposite message: Cash only, Sorry, no cards, or Cash and card welcome. Other common payment notices are Card minimum £5, Please pay at the counter and We cannot give change for large notes. Charcoal reads as calm and neutral; navy or forest green suit a shop with those colours in its branding.

Put the sign where the decision is made: on the door at eye height, and again at the till or on the front of the stall. If you are cashless, check what your card reader takes before you print the second line, and say whether you accept phones and watches, which many customers now use first. A sign that apologises, as this one does, tends to get fewer complaints than a bare No cash.

Print at 100%. The solid band uses a fair amount of dark ink, so if you need several copies, choose the border style instead, which prints the main words in charcoal on white inside a double frame. Laminate the till copy, since it will be handled. For a stall, a clear plastic stand-up frame or a clip on the front of the table keeps it upright in the wind.
