About this version

An open and closed sign is the one sign almost every small shop, café, salon and studio needs, and it gets turned round twice a day, every day. This version prints two A4 landscape sheets with exactly the same layout, so the sign looks the same from the street whichever way round it hangs. The first sheet reads The Corner Shop in forest green at the top, then Open in white rounded lettering on a solid forest green band across the middle, then Come in, we're open underneath. The second reads The Corner Shop, Closed on the same green band, and Open again at 8am tomorrow. Both words are lettered at the same size, set by the longer word, so the sign does not jump in size when it turns. Each sheet has a thin green frame and a dashed punch mark near each top corner, in the same place on both.

Type your own shop name, or leave it blank to give the main word more room. Change the line under Closed to your real reopening time, or to something like Back on Monday or See our hours below. Many shops like green for open and a different colour for closed; this tool keeps one colour for both so the pair matches, but you can print the closed sheet a second time in berry or coral and pair those instead.

Hang the sign at eye height on the inside of the door glass, facing out, where people look before they try the handle. If the door has a blind, hang it on the blind's pull cord rather than the glass. Check the sign is the right way round before you leave at night: a sign left on Open is the most common reason for a confused phone call the next morning.

To make it, print both sheets at 100% on card, glue them back to back with the punch marks lined up, or slide both into one A4 plastic sleeve. Punch the two marked holes with a single-hole punch, thread a cord or a length of ribbon through and knot the ends. A suction hook on the glass holds it firmly.
