About this version

Christmas dinner is often the biggest meal of the year at home, with extra chairs from the bedroom, a card table on the end and three generations round it. Place cards stop the scramble for seats and put the children where they can be helped. This set prints a small five-pointed star above each name in berry red, the deep red of holly berries, with the name in classic lettering in the same colour underneath. The ten sample cards are for a family table: Grandma, Grandad, Auntie Sue, Uncle Pete, Mum, Dad, Ella, Jack, Nana Pat and Oscar.

Each card is 90 by 110 mm flat and folds across the middle into a tent 90 by 55 mm on each side, with the star and the name printed on both halves so they read from either side of the table. Four cards fit a portrait A4 sheet, so ten cards take three sheets, the last with two cards and room left over. The star is drawn as a shape, so it prints crisp even on a basic printer.

Type the names as your family uses them: Grandma rather than Margaret, or a nickname. Add a second line after a bar for a cracker joke, a riddle or the answer to a quiz, such as Uncle Pete | What do snowmen eat for lunch? Change berry to forest green for a traditional look, or gold for a smarter table. For Boxing Day, Hanukkah, Eid or a New Year's Eve dinner, change the motif to a heart or a sprig of leaves.

Print at 100% on white or cream card, or on red or green card in black and white. Cut and fold the cards the day before, with the children's help if they are old enough to use scissors: folding along the dotted line is an easy job for a five-year-old. On the day, a card tucked into a folded napkin or leaning on a cracker saves space on a crowded table.
