Allotment sites usually have one notice board on the hut, the shed or the gate, and it is where the committee tells plot holders about work parties, water, deliveries of manure and the annual show. This set gives it a friendly, garden look. The banner reads Plot news in playful capitals 15 cm tall. Each letter sits on its own pale tile with a coloured edge, in turn pale coral, pale yellow, pale green, pale blue and pale lilac, and the lettering is dark green throughout. At 15 cm each letter takes an A4 landscape sheet, so the banner prints on eight sheets and is about 1.3 m long once they are butted together. Six section headers follow on two more sheets: Work parties, Seed and plant swap, Water and tools, Plot vacancies, Show dates and Committee, each a pale pastel strip 27.7 by 6 cm with a coloured edge. Ten sheets in all.
Swap the headers for your site: Manure delivery, Rent due, Composting, Wildlife area, Shop opening times or Bonfire rules are common. If the board is small, 10 cm letters fit two or three to a sheet and the banner shrinks to about 90 cm. The pastels use little ink and look soft against wood; for a brighter board, choose the bright mix, or one colour such as kiwi green or forest green with solid strips.
The most useful section on an allotment board is usually Plot vacancies, with the waiting list contact, followed by the work party dates. Keep the water section up to date in spring and autumn, when the supply is turned on and off. A pen on a string and a sheet for the seed swap lets plot holders add their own spares.
An outdoor board needs protection. Laminate every banner tile and header before you cut them out, leaving a few millimetres of laminate round the edge so water cannot creep in, and fix them with stainless drawing pins or staples. Cut each band out on its dashed outline and butt the sheets together in order. Under a shed roof or behind perspex, card on its own lasts a season.
