In short

Notice board headers

Notice board headers are the title and section labels that turn a cork board into something people read. This tool prints a banner of display capitals 10, 15 or 20 cm tall across A4 sheets, plus one header strip for each section you type, such as What's on, Contacts or Rota, all in matching colours.

How to make it

  1. Type the banner words, such as Notices or What's on, and choose how tall the letters should be.
  2. Type one section header per line and choose half-sheet or third-sheet strips, solid or outlined.
  3. Pick the lettering and colours, press Make it, print at 100% and cut out on the dashed lines.

How it prints

The banner is set in capitals at a true height: choose 10, 15 or 20 cm and a capital H prints exactly that tall. At 10 and 15 cm each A4 landscape sheet carries as many whole letters as fit, never part of one, inside a band with a coloured rule along the top and bottom. Cut each band out on its dashed outline and butt the sheets edge to edge in order; the spacing across each join is the same as inside a sheet, so the word reads as one strip. At 20 cm a single letter can be wider than a sheet, so that size prints as one long strip across portrait sheets with a 1 cm glue strip at every join, numbered left to right.

Section headers print one per line you type, as strips 27.7 cm wide: half a landscape sheet deep (9 cm, two to a sheet) or a third (6 cm, three to a sheet). Solid strips are filled with colour and lettered in white; outlined strips are white with a thick coloured border and coloured words. Every header in a set is lettered at the same size, so a short word such as Kit matches a long one such as Health and safety. The bright mix gives each letter and header the next colour in turn; soft pastels put each banner letter on its own pale tile.

Questions

Questions people ask

How many sheets will my banner take?

The tool tells you when you make it. As a guide, 10 cm capitals fit two or three to an A4 landscape sheet, so Notices takes three sheets and is about 70 cm long. At 15 cm most letters take a sheet each, and at 20 cm a short word such as Club news takes ten portrait sheets.

Will the letters be cut in half where the sheets meet?

Not at 10 or 15 cm: each sheet carries whole letters and the band ends just after the last one, so you trim and butt the sheets together. At 20 cm letters are too wide for one sheet, so the banner is tiled with a glue strip at each join and the strip lines the letter up.

What size are the section headers?

Each header is 27.7 cm wide. Half-sheet headers are 9 cm deep and print two to an A4 landscape sheet; third-sheet headers are 6 cm deep and print three to a sheet. Half-sheet headers suit a board read from across a room, thirds suit a busy board with many sections.

Can I make headers without a banner?

Yes. Leave the banner words blank and the tool prints only the section headers. You can also leave the headers blank and print only the banner.

How do I stop the headers fading or curling?

Print on 160 to 200 gsm card, or laminate the sheets after cutting. A notice board near a window fades in a few months; matt laminating pouches cut the glare and keep the colours.
