This plan steps four A4 frames up a staircase wall, 8 cm apart, each frame 21.8 cm higher than the last so the line follows a typical stair pitch. The group is 108 cm wide and 95.1 cm tall, and every nail height is measured from one level line: the stair edge under the middle of the arrangement.

A staircase wall is a long, tall space that people walk past slowly, which makes it a good place for family photographs. The usual approach is to step the frames up with the stairs, so the line of pictures runs parallel to the handrail. This version hangs four A4 frames in portrait, 21 by 29.7 cm, with an 8 cm gap between them, each one 21.8 cm higher than the one before. That rise is three quarters of the 29 cm from one frame to the next, close to the slope of a typical home staircase. The group is 108 cm wide and 95.1 cm tall. The PDF is nine sheets: the plan, then two sheets for each frame.
On stairs there is no single floor to measure from, so every height in the table is measured from one level line: the edge of the stair directly below the middle of the arrangement. Find that step, measure up 145 cm and draw a short level pencil line there; that is the centre of the group. With a 5 cm hanger drop, the nails sit 122.2 cm, 144 cm, 165.8 cm and 187.6 cm above the level of that stair edge, at 10.5 cm, 39.5 cm, 68.5 cm and 97.5 cm from the left edge of the group. Use a long spirit level or a laser level to carry the heights along the wall.
The plan climbs to the right. If your stairs climb to the left, hang it mirrored: measure the distances from the right-hand end instead, and hang frame 1 at the right. Change the frame size and the gap to suit your wall; the steps change with them. Larger frames, such as 30 by 40 cm, suit a wide stairwell.
Working on stairs needs care. Use a stable step ladder made for stairs, or a platform, never a chair, and keep the stairs clear while you work. Check for cables and pipes before you drill, then tape up the templates and look at them from the bottom and the top of the stairs before you commit.
