This plan hangs seven frames of four sizes in two rows either side of one centre line, 5 cm apart: a 40 x 50 cm landscape frame flanked by two 20 x 25 cm frames above, and two A4 landscape and two 13 x 18 cm frames below. The wall is 100.4 cm wide and 66 cm tall.

A salon wall mixes frame sizes in one balanced group, the way paintings were hung in nineteenth century exhibitions. The trick that keeps it tidy is a single horizontal line through the middle: the top row hangs down to it and the bottom row stands up from it, with the same gap everywhere. This version uses seven frames. Above the line, a 40 by 50 cm frame in landscape sits between two 20 by 25 cm frames in portrait, their bottoms level. Below it, two A4 frames in landscape sit at the ends with two 13 by 18 cm frames between them, their tops level. Every gap is 5 cm. The whole wall is 100.4 cm wide and 66 cm tall, with its centre line 145 cm above the floor, its top at 178 cm and its bottom at 112 cm. With a 5 cm hanger drop, the nails are at 173 cm for the large frame, 158 cm for the two upper frames and 128 cm for the whole lower row. The PDF is 16 sheets: the plan and the templates.
The frame sizes in this layout are fixed so the two rows balance, but the gap, the centre height, the hanger drop and the frame edge all change it. A wider gap of 8 cm gives a looser, more relaxed feel; 3 cm makes it read as one block. If your own frames are different sizes, use the plan as a guide and swap like for like: a frame of a similar size in the same position keeps the balance.
A salon wall works best with a mix of pictures that share something: a colour, a subject or a frame finish. Put the strongest piece in the large top frame. Before you commit, cut the templates out and tape them up for a day or two: it is much easier to move paper than to fill holes.
Print at 100%. The larger frames print across several sheets with glue strips. Tape the templates up along a pencil line at 145 cm, check with a spirit level, then drill or nail through each crosshair after checking for cables and pipes.
Print house numbers at a true height, 5 to 30 cm, to trace and paint on a door or gate, or cut out for a wheelie bin. Free printable A4 PDF.
Print a big lettered title banner and matching section headers for a notice board: letters 10, 15 or 20 cm tall on A4. Free PDF for halls and offices.
Make a big printable sign for a wedding, party or event: your words as large as they fit, an optional arrow, on A4, A3 or as a folded table tent.
