About this version
A nine-frame grid is the classic photo wall: a year of family pictures, holiday photographs printed the same size, or a set of black and white prints. This version uses 20 by 25 cm frames, the size sold as 8 by 10 inches, in portrait, three across and three down, with a 5 cm gap all round. The whole grid is 70 cm wide and 85 cm tall, with its centre 145 cm above the floor, its top at 187.5 cm and its bottom at 102.5 cm. Frames this size usually have a sawtooth hanger close to the top, so the hanger drop is set to 4 cm. That puts the three rows of nails at 183.5 cm, 153.5 cm and 123.5 cm above the floor, and the three columns at 10 cm, 35 cm and 60 cm from the left edge. The PDF is 19 sheets: the plan, then two sheets for each frame.
Change the frame size to suit what you have. In A4 frames the same grid grows to 73 cm wide and 99.1 cm tall; in 13 by 18 cm frames it shrinks to a neat block for a hallway. Measure the drop on one of your own frames: put a ruler on the top edge and read down to the point of the sawtooth hanger. If every frame is identical, one measurement serves all nine.
A grid this tall looks best centred on a wall of its own or above a long, low piece of furniture. Keep the photographs in a similar style, all colour or all black and white, so the grid reads as one piece. Lay the frames out on the floor first to settle which picture goes where, and write the frame number on a piece of tape on the back of each.
Print at 100% and tape the two parts of each template together. Hang the middle row first, level, then the rows above and below it, so any small error spreads both ways. Check for cables and pipes before drilling. Picture hooks suit these light frames on plasterboard.
