This gallery wall plan for over a sofa hangs a 50 x 70 cm landscape frame between two 30 x 40 cm portrait frames, 8 cm apart, a group 146 cm wide and 50 cm tall. Its centre sits 140 cm above the floor and the nails at 159 cm in the middle and 154 cm either side.

The wall above a sofa is the most common place for a gallery wall, and the hardest to judge by eye, because the sofa changes how high the pictures look. This version uses one large piece in the middle, a 50 by 70 cm frame hung in landscape, with a 30 by 40 cm frame in portrait on either side, all centred on one horizontal line with an 8 cm gap. The group is 146 cm wide and 50 cm tall. The centre is set to 140 cm above the floor rather than the usual 145 cm, which puts the bottom of the large frame at 115 cm: about 25 cm above the back of a typical sofa, 85 to 90 cm high. The top is at 165 cm. With a 6 cm hanger drop, the middle nail is 159 cm above the floor and 73 cm from the left edge, and the side nails are 154 cm high at 15 cm and 131 cm. The PDF is 17 sheets, because the large frame's template spans eight sheets and each side frame four.
Measure the back of your sofa and change the centre height so the bottom edge sits 20 to 30 cm above it. The rule of thumb for width is about two thirds of the sofa: this group suits a sofa of about 2 m to 2.2 m. For a smaller two-seater, choose 5 cm gaps; for a long corner sofa, try 10 cm gaps or the salon wall instead.
Centre the group on the sofa, not the wall, and measure from the middle of the sofa out to find the left edge of the arrangement: half of 146 cm is 73 cm, so the left edge is 73 cm to the left of the sofa's centre. A large frame is heavy, so hang it on two hooks or a fixing rated for its weight, and check behind the sofa for sockets and the cables that run up from them.
Print at 100% and glue the parts of each template together. With the sofa pulled out, tape them up, level, and check the view from where you sit.
