About this version

A party food menu at a child's birthday is half sign and half decoration: the children like to read it, and the grown-ups like to know what is in what. This preset prints on one A4 portrait sheet in the light style, with a double sky blue frame. Party food is lettered in large sky blue playful capitals and lower case, with Grace is 6 today! in grey underneath and a small ornament rule. Three sky blue headings follow. Savoury lists mini sausage rolls, cheese and cucumber sandwiches, pizza slices, crisps and breadsticks, and carrot and cucumber sticks. Sweet lists fairy cakes, chocolate crispy cakes, and jelly and ice cream. Drinks lists squash, water and apple juice. That is nine items, and because the menu has only a few short lines and no prices, it is set centred at a large size, about 22 pt for each item on A4, easy for a new reader.

Change the name and the age, and the food to match the party: a picnic, a pizza party, a sleepover breakfast or a party at a soft play centre or a village hall. Each item can have a short description after a dash, such as Mini sausage rolls - vegetarian ones on the blue plate. Sky blue is a good all-round colour; berry, kiwi green, coral or lilac all work with the playful lettering, and the chalkboard board looks good for an older child.

Allergies matter more at a children's party than almost anywhere. Ask parents about allergies on the invitation, and label any food that contains nuts, eggs or milk in the description. Put the menu at child height near the food table so children can point at what they want.

The light board uses very little ink, so print one for each end of the table. Print on card and stand it in a small frame, or tape it to the front of the table. A copy in a plastic sleeve survives sticky fingers, and it makes a nice keepsake with the invitation afterwards.
