About this version

Afternoon tea is usually sold at one price per person, so the menu is a description rather than a price list, and it should look as calm as the tea itself. This preset prints on one A4 portrait sheet in the light style: white, with a double sage green frame, Afternoon tea in sage green classic lettering at the top, and a subtitle in grey that reads £24 per person, served from 2pm, with a request to mention allergies. Four headings follow, each in sage between two fine rules: Sandwiches, with cucumber and cream cheese, egg mayonnaise and cress, smoked salmon and dill, and coronation chicken, each with a short description of the bread; Scones, plain and fruit, with strawberry jam and Cornish clotted cream; Cakes, with Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, a chocolate éclair and a raspberry macaron; and Tea, with two lines of choices. That is 11 items, and because none has a price, every line is set centred.

Type your own menu and price. A tearoom, a hotel, a village hall fundraiser, a baby shower or a birthday tea at home all suit this layout. For an event with a price per item, add = £ prices and the menu switches to left-aligned items with dotted leaders. Sage and classic lettering look traditional; lilac or berry suit a hen party or a baby shower.

Order the menu the way it is served: sandwiches on the bottom tier, scones in the middle, cakes on top, then the tea list. Say what is in each sandwich, since guests ask, and offer a vegetarian or gluten-free version on request. The tea list is a good place to show off loose-leaf choices.

Print on cream or ivory card for a softer look; the light board uses little ink and prints well on a home printer. Stand the menu in a clear acrylic frame on each table, or roll it and tie it with ribbon on each place setting. For a single board by the door, choose A3 and frame it.
