  • Every capital and numeral is 15 cm (150 mm) tall, in the rounded lettering
  • Printed as outlines to trace round and paint inside: a trace template, not a cut stencil
  • Each piece has a baseline and a top line exactly 15 cm apart, and a dashed centre line, for lining it up and checking the print with a ruler

About this version

A number on the gate or the fence is the one delivery drivers, visitors and emergency services look for first, especially where the house sits back from the road or the door faces the side. This preset prints the number 112 at 15 cm tall in the rounded style, whose soft, even strokes stay readable from a distance and paint easily with a brush. The three numerals print as outlines across two landscape A4 sheets. Each piece has a baseline and a top line exactly 15 cm apart and a dashed centre line, and together the number is about 35 cm wide, which fits a standard garden gate or a fence panel.

Type your own number. For a short number on a gatepost, 10 cm may be enough; for a long driveway or a farm gate, 20 or 25 cm reads better from a moving car. Choose the classic style if the gate is formal ironwork. On a dark fence, paint the number in white or cream; on a pale gate, black, charcoal or a dark green reads best.

Wood needs to be clean, dry and lightly sanded. On a stained or treated fence, use an exterior wood paint; on a metal gate, rub down any rust, prime with a metal primer and paint with a paint for metal. Run a strip of masking tape along the bottom as a level baseline, tape the pieces to it, and trace through with graphite paper or by rubbing soft pencil on the back of each sheet. The holes in numbers such as 0, 6, 8 and 9 are closed, so trace them rather than cutting the outline out.

On slatted fencing, trace across the gaps as if they were not there and paint each slat, so the number reads as one shape from the road. Paint on a dry day above about 10 degrees, and check the forecast: most exterior paints need a few hours without rain. A second coat the next day gives a strong, even colour.
